Honeymoon Rewind #5

So day 5 began with us taking the lovely Deutsche Bahn (high speed train)
to see the lovely castle, Hohenwerfen Castle, we saw when we took the train in from the airport several days prior.
It's quite a beauty!

We had asked at our hotel how to get there so we felt like we had a pretty good idea of what to do. Once we got off the train we proceeded to take a nice 3/4 mile walk to the base of the castle. We had spoken with several sources who said we could easily walk up the mountain instead of paying the 10 Euros to take the tram up. We, being cheapies, enjoyed this idea, so hiking we went. It was nearing the middle of the day, definitely heating up, and as you can see by the video, it was far from the "easy" quick jaunt up the mountain that was advertised.

Either way it was quite the adventure! Also note our adventurer names - Amelia and Jacques :)

The castle is surrounded by the impressive Berchtesgaden Alps and built originally between 1075 and 1078. Many people occupied the fortress, including archbishops, wealthy families, prison, and, it even served as a military base.

Nice front yard, eh?

We started our adventure off with famous Birds of Prey show complete with trained Falcons and Bald Eagles! Naturally, it was all in German so we just smiled and watched the birds, pretending we knew what the heck they were talking about!

We then went on an audio tour of the castle to see all the fancy rooms, like the chapel in the picture below.

Then we went to the dungeon to see where they kept all the bad guys.

We spent the rest of the day exploring the castle grounds

And eating of course!
After we said our goodbyes we decided to begin the trek back down the moutain

Notice the wet hair! I think we wet our hair down at least 3 times that day because it was soo hot!

The way down is much easier than the way up!

We decided to sit by the river nearby for a little rest since it was soo hot!

We ended the day at our favorite restaurant where we ate delicious delicious amazing food! Also, it seems to be some interesting custom here to give the customers shots of Schnapps after their meal with their bill. Perhaps in hopes that they give you a better tip? Not sure, but nice either way!

Until we meet again!
